MEC MOTLHABANE LOBBIES POPCRU IN NORTH WEST TO PARTNER DEPT AND SOCIETY IN COMBATING CRIME, VIOLENCE AND WELCOMING INTERVENTIONS In his address this last Friday, 12 October 2018 to the North West POPCRU's Provincial Shopsteward Council Meeting, Stonehenge Lodge, Potchefstroom, MEC Motlhabane lobbied the Police, Traffic and Correctional Service Union to partner with the department and communities in fighting crime, violence as well as welcome Minister Cele's interventions. MEC Motlhabane reminded the POPCRU Council to celebrate the100 years since Mme Albertina Sisulu was born on the 21st October 2018. He challenged POPCRU in the Province to pay homage to her contribution to the country's liberation, reflect on her character and attributes. He also called upon the current generation of leaders and members of POPCRU and society in general to emulate Mme Sisulu. He recalled that in her words, MaSisulu said; "in my family ubuntu was a case of action not words". To this end he called on the meeting consider doing voluntary services at health-care centres, orphanages, old-age home, home for the homeless and at crèches. In recognising that a council is a high level meeting, the MEC then took shared the department's work with the Provincial Council. To the effect that; the department had conducted two (2) Research Projects on police service demilitarisation, indicated that all CPF were established at various police station s and that Community Safety Forums (CSF)boards were also established at many municipalities. He went on to gloat that; the department's Safety Patrollers program has benefitted a total of 387 unemployed men and women, participated in school safety programme that benefitted a 100 identified priority schools during which issues relating to bullying, gangsterism, substance abuse, possession of dangerous weapons as well as addressed schools and communities on the scourge of sexual offences and domestic violence. 44 Road Safety Rangers were appointed on to remove stray animals on identified hotspots along the national, provincial and local roads; Makhubung, Lekoko, Morwatshetlha, Masutlhe, Setlagole, Madibogo, Dryharts, Pudumong, Mogopela, Taung, Dihatshwane, Rooigrond, Makapanstad, Moretele, Tladistad, Moema, Bethanie, Modikoe, Makolokoe and Barseba. MEC also used the opportunity to applaud the participation of over 737 community members, departments, organizations and other stakeholders who partnered the department, through this Civilian Secretariat Unit. "Surely SAPS alone cannot win the fight against crime. I appeal to our communities at large and yourselves, POPCRU members and leaders in particular, to avail yourselves. Crime doesn't only affect us socially but it affects the economy of the country. And has the potential to chase away investors". MEC emphasised. MEC Motlhabane shared that; "North West is largely affected by crime relating to public instability and civil unrest. Protesters are torching government, business and private properties. Committing acts of theft, attacking people, and sometimes people's life's are lost. SAPS partnered with various communities to foster crime reduction. Alcohol abuse is a major contributor to the increase in the social ills within society. Rapes, family violence, family killing, bullying, gang attacks and assaults and house burglaries are on the rise. 164 383 incidences of individual crime were reported, an increase of 73 401 crime. House breaking or burglary is among the 13 household crimes hovering at 54%''. Retorted the MEC MEC Motlhabane pleaded with POPCRU PSC to welcomed the intervention by Police Minister Bheki Cele, which is part of the broader strategy to fight the scourge of trafficking of drugs, human, gang-related violence and rampant heists. Such intervention includes the deployment of the tactical response team and a greater visible policing presence. In the same vein the MEC, congratulated the successful of aborting of a planned heist of SASSA monies destined to various communities as well as the arrest of the perpetrators. MEC in conclusion quoted President Mandela who once said: “our freedom is also incomplete, dear compatriots, as long as we are denied our security by the criminals who prey upon our communities; who rob our businesses and undermine our economy; who ply their destructive trade in drugs in our schools; who do violence against our women and children.” Provincial Shopsteward Council is called upon to rally behind the 'Thuma Mina' campaign, to act with greater determination in realising this selfless mission. MEC Motlhabane wrapped up his address with a presentation of a certificate of recognition for POPCRU's contributions, commitment, leadership collectivism, membership service, diligence and fostering consultation. This gesture was received by COSATU and POPCRU NW Chairperson, Cde Solly Lekhu, on behalf of the Union and in the presence of the POPCRU National 2nd Deputy General Secretary, Cde Nomalanga Mabokela.
